Missing The Pointz
November 13th, 2013
After a good fight, the New York City graffiti mecca 5 Pointz appears to be in its last days. Instead of mourning the ever-shifting warehouse canvas, it might be better to marvel at how amazing it is the site lasted as long as it did.
The Long Island City building, home to low-rent artist studios, has attracted the world’s premiere street and graffiti artists for over a decade. Murals have been overseen by an in-house collective — all with the approval of the building’s owner, David Walkoff, who now wants to sell the building for some hundred-million dollar residential opportunity. Can you blame dude? Probably, gentrification, circle of life, blah blah blah.
There’s silver lining: no one’s going to forget 5 Pointz any time soon, and those who live and love it will surely find a new site worthy of their spray. The writing’s on the walls.
