With the arrival of spring and the departure of what was an exceptionally tame winter, it’s a good time to break out your bike if you haven’t already done so.
If you’re in the market for a new steed, there are a couple cats in the Bay Area who will build you one out of recycled Honduran mahogany, cherry and maple hardwoods. They are a touch pricy, but you are paying for a handcrafted bike made out of ornamental Chinese pistache and an uprooted redwood and whatever other choice woods they manage to find laying around their San Jose shop. Worth it? Probably.
While we’re on the subject of riding bikes, a word to the wise: Lock up! Otherwise, you may end up like Aspen, Colorado’s Jay Maytin, who left his bike unlocked outside of his wife’s law office only to find it stolen upon his return. Luckily, it all worked out. The bike was found outside a local police station the next day with a note that read, “Sorry. I stole this bike. I rode it home. Please give it back.” It was signed, “Drunk.”
